Smog Plan
* I applaud Mayor Richard Riordan’s decision to get involved with the AQMD smog plan (Aug. 10). Next he should lobby the federal government to allocate a substantial commitment of land and water conservation funds for the L.A. region. These are moneys paid to the federal government by the oil companies to mitigate pollution caused by oil drilling.
It is scandalous that the federal government is hoarding funds ($800 million per year) created to mitigate pollution caused by oil drilling, while at the same time threatening us with sanctions for not meeting federal air quality standards.
Please join us in our efforts to loosen land and water conservation funds to preserve critical airshed, such as the 5,400-acre Ahmanson Ranch, located next to the smoggy San Fernando Valley.
