COMPTON : Ex-College Chief Settles Lawsuit for $125,000

A former Compton Community College president has accepted a $125,000 offer from school officials to settle his lawsuit, which claimed he was fired improperly.
Warren A. Washington, 44, also agreed to resign from a counseling position he has held since trustees ousted him as president. Washington could not be reached for comment.
David Horne, vice president of academic affairs, said the settlement “will end a chapter, and I think the school needs to get about its business and move forward instead of wallowing in the past.”
Washington was fired in March, 1993, from his $84,000-a-year job after an audit concluded that officials had improperly spent about $500,000 in federal funds earmarked for programs to help low-income college students. Trustees contended that Washington, who had been president for three years, failed to administer the school competently.
The trustees in November hired Byron R. Skinner, a community college administrator from San Antonio, Tex., as president.
