Housing: City Charter and New Hope Project
The article of July 17 about project New Hope (“How A Good Idea Became a Political Hot Potatoâ€) left the reader with the notion that the (Santa Monica) City Council could use the parcel in question for something other than on-site, affordable housing. It should have been made clear that replacing the 11 affordable units previously there was mandated by the city’s charter. Debate about open space, parkland, commercial use, luxury housing or any other use on this site must begin with that fact.
