Cardinals Open Series With Rout
The Orange County Cardinals put on an impressive offensive display in their opening game of the Connie Mack World Series Saturday in Farmington, N.M.
The Cardinals beat Detroit, 12-2, in a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

Orange County has outscored opponents, 57-19, in its last five games.
Derek Baker, a graduate of Tustin High, added two hits and two runs batted in also for the Cardinals, who scored six runs in the third to break a 2-2 tie. The Cardinals scored another run in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Pete Zamora, a graduate of Capistrano Valley High, gave up three hits and two runs in the first inning but didn’t allow a hit over the next three innings to get the victory. He had seven strikeouts.
