SYLMAR : Golden State Pothole Triggers Traffic Jam
A two-foot pothole on the Golden State Freeway in Sylmar prompted the closure of two lanes and a nearby freeway interchange Friday, triggering a daylong traffic jam, Caltrans officials said.
Road repair crews rushed to fill and fix the two-foot hole which developed about 10 a.m. Friday on the southbound Golden State Freeway near the San Fernando Road exit, said Pat Reid of the California Department of Transportation.
Two lanes of traffic as well as the interchange between the southbound Golden State Freeway and the eastbound Foothill Freeway reopened about 3:15 p.m.
The pothole apparently developed at the site of a temporary patch applied to the freeway’s surface, which was damaged during the Northridge quake.
