Bell Atlantic Planning Cuts: Bell Atlantic Corp. is planning to announce “aggressive cost reductions†next week, according to an internal company memo quoted in the Baltimore Sun. The newspaper said the memo indicated an announcement Tuesday would detail “a sweeping accounting change†as well as job cuts, “center reductions†and an increase in the number of employees reporting to each executive. Bell Atlantic had no comment. Spokeswoman Cynthia Ciangio said Bell Atlantic had 73,100 employees as of June 30. Since 1984, she said, the utility has cut about 12,000 jobs. The most recent round of reductions was in 1992, when about 3,450 jobs were eliminated.
