CALABASAS : Council Seeks Study of Theater Proposals

As it considers approval of a second major cinema complex, the Calabasas City Council has ordered a study of whether two theater centers could be supported by local moviegoers.
“I think we need all the information we can get at our fingertips,” said Councilman Marvin Lopata. “It’s a tricky problem. And I don’t know how far we go as a city to infringe on free enterprise.”
The council is expected to vote as early as Aug. 10 on whether to approve an eight-plex theater complex as part of a planned, 1.5-million-square-foot office and retail project known as Calabasas Park Centre at the corner of Calabasas Road and Parkway Calabasas.
In November, 1992, the council approved an eight-theater movie house as part of a 190,000-square-foot commercial center near the corner of Las Virgenes and Agoura roads, about two miles west of the Park Centre project. Neither project has begun construction.
