The Conejo Valley school board awarded a $1.4-million contract to Carroll Construction Co. this week to build an athletic stadium at Westlake High School.
The Santa Barbara-based company presented the lowest of three bids for the project, which is expected to be completed by May of next year.
But even the lowest bid was more than the school district had planned to pay for the new 3,646-seat concrete stadium, which is being financed primarily through community donations.
“The bids were higher than we anticipated they would be,” board member Dorothy Beaubien said Thursday. “There will be some shortfall, but it will be made up. It is not a major problem.”
About $1.2-million has been raised for the project, leaving a shortfall of about $250,000 to $300,000.
Board member Mildred Lynch said the money will be made up through funds the district receives from city redevelopment taxes.
Construction of the stadium will start at the end of August.
