Angel, DiTullio Qualify for Match Play

Darren Angel of Northridge and Brandon DiTullio of Thousand Oaks survived the 36-hole cut Wednesday at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in Westfield, N.J.

Angel and DiTullio made the cut of 153 at the 6,704-yard Echo Lake Country Club. The 156-player field was trimmed to the low 64, who advanced to match play, which begins with two rounds today.

Angel, a senior at Granada Hills High, shot a six-over-par 78 to finish the stroke-play portion of the event in a five-way tie for 17th place at 147. Angel, playing in his second U.S. Junior Amateur, missed the cut last year.

DiTullio, a senior at Westlake High, shot 78 and finished in a five-way tie for 32nd at 150.

“My iron play wasn’t very good,” DiTullio said.

Michael Henderson of Raleigh, N.C., was the medalist at 70-69--139.

In the first round, Angel faces Richard Topping of Laurel, Md. Topping shot 78-73--151. DiTullio faces Josh Levin of San Francisco, who shot 72-74--146 to finish in a tie for 13th.

The semifinals and final will be played Saturday.
