Dancer Gene Kelly Hospitalized After Suffering Stroke

Entertainer Gene Kelly was hospitalized after suffering a mild stroke, officials at UCLA Medical Center said Sunday.

Kelly, 81, was in stable condition and resting comfortably, hospital spokesman Chris Woodson said. Kelly, known for his singing and dancing in Hollywood musicals such as “An American in Paris” and “Singin’ in the Rain,” was admitted to the hospital Saturday, Woodson said.

Woodson said he did not know when Kelly would be released.

Kelly was hospitalized in May for treatment of cellulitis, a skin bacteria that infected his right leg.

During his career, which has spanned more than half a century, Kelly has performed in, directed or produced 47 films.

He appeared most recently in “That’s Entertainment! III,” a sequel to the popular 1974 anthology of MGM musicals.

Kelly attended the July 16 concert at Dodger Stadium featuring opera tenors Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti.

Kelly stood up and exchanged nods with the three performers after they sang his signature song, “Singin’ in the Rain.”
