GOODWILL GAMES ROUNDUP : For Openers, U.S. Handles Argentina, 83-71

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — The United States basketball team, led by Michael Finley’s 16 points, Damon Stoudamire’s floor leadership and rebounding by Tim Duncan and Andrew LeCler, won its opening game Saturday, beating Argentina, 83-71.

The Americans shot nearly 60% and out-rebounded Argentina, 45-21, with Duncan getting 11 and DeCler eight.

Stoudamire, who scored 12 points, had five assists.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

The U.S. helped introduce the sport into international competition by winning five matches.

Karolyn Kirby and Liz Masakayan of San Diego beat Natalya Belousova and Mariya Kopylova of Russia, 15-3, and Monica Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel of Brazil, 15-7. Barbara Fontana of Laguna Beach and Lori Forsythe of Encinitas defeated Simone Kooy and Claire Paterson of the Netherlands, 15-9.

Carlos Briceno of Fountain Valley and Jeff Williams of Santa Monica beat Aloizio Claudino and Emanuel Rego of Brazil, 15-9, and Sinjin Smith of Pacific Palisades and Bruk Vandeweghe of Beverly Hills beat Andrew Burdin and Julien Prosser of Australia, 15-10.

BOXING

The U.S. won two of its four opening-day bouts, both victories coming in the light flyweight division. Eric Morel of Madison, Wis., outpointed Karmine Molaro of Italy, 13-7, and Albert Guardado of Topeka, Kan., beat Joni Turunen of Finland, 13-0.
