JAEN, Spain — Two brothers were detained for negligently starting a forest fire in a Spanish national park, police said Thursday.
The brothers were held after they admitted dropping burning cigarette butts that apparently sparked the blaze in the pine-covered hills of the Cazorla national park in Andalusia on Wednesday night.
The Cazorla blaze was the latest in the worst wave of forest and brush fires to hit Spain in recent years. At the start of July dozens of fires destroyed 325,000 acres in the east and south of the country and claimed 20 lives.
