LEXINGTON, Ky. — Wayne Lukas, trainer of Preakness and Belmont winner Tabasco Cat, was the leading buyer for the first time at Keeneland’s July Selected Yearling Sale. He bought 14 horses for $4,125,000 during the two-day sale that ended Tuesday.
“We’re enjoying a good spring, obviously, and getting into the sales ring has been important to our program,” he said. “We had a couple of years we didn’t get in as actively, and this is certainly going to help.”
Lukas’ top purchase was $775,000 for a Pleasant Colony colt. Many of his purchases were for Californian Bob Lewis. Lukas trains 20 of Lewis’ horses. The top price at the sale was $1.05 million for a Mr. Prospector filly out of Winning Colors.
