LOS ANGELES : City Settles Suit in Alleged Police Beatings at Party

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday approved a payment of $556,160 to 30 people who alleged that police beat them while responding to complaints about a loud party.
Police said a brawl erupted when they arrived in Arleta on April 1, 1989. The plaintiffs claimed that officers formed a gantlet and hit them with batons as party-goers walked out of the house. Officers said they drew their batons and flashlights but denied striking anyone.
The plaintiffs will split $355,241. Their attorney will collect $200,918 in fees, costs and interest. A report from the city attorney’s office stated that officers acted within department guidelines. No disciplinary action was taken.
The council’s Budget and Finance Committee also recommended payment of $181,777 to settle lawsuits brought by two children who said a park employee molested them between September, 1987, and October, 1988.
