General Dynamics, UAW Reach Tentative Pact: The defense company’s tank business said the agreement, if ratified this week, could end, as early as July 25, a monthlong strike of 1,900 United Auto Workers workers in the Detroit area; Lima, Ohio, and near Scranton, Pa. The General Dynamics Land Systems workers, who make parts and assemble armored tanks and radios, struck after the company asked them to help pay for their health benefits. The three-year contract calls for them to pay for 10% of their coverage, the UAW said; managers and non-union workers would pay for 20%. Union workers would also get 3% raises for the first and third years and a 3% lump-sum payment the second year, the union said. The average union wage is $17.20 an hour.
