Nomination papers for two City Council seats to be contested in the November election will be available beginning today.
Laguna Niguel residents who wish to run for the seats held by council members Patricia C. Bates and James F. Krembas have until 5 p.m. Aug. 12 to file nomination papers.
Nomination papers must be signed by 20 to 30 registered Laguna Niguel voters.
City Clerk Juanita Zarilla recommends that potential candidates gather the maximum number of signatures in case any are deemed invalid.
Voters may sign the nomination papers of only two potential candidates.
Candidates must also submit a statement of economic interests along with the signatures.
For a $750 fee, candidates may also turn in a personal statement to be placed in the sample ballot.
Council members earn a $400 monthly stipend.
The forms may be picked up at the city clerk’s office, 27801 La Paz Road.
If an incumbent does not file nomination papers by the Aug. 12 deadline, the filing period will be extended to Aug. 17.
