Airlines Announce Fare Cuts: The nation’s leading carriers said they will trim fares by up to 50% for midweek travel through Sept. 29, enticing travelers to take to the skies on the less-traveled weekdays. Initiated by Houston-based Continental Airlines, the cuts were soon matched by United Airlines, American Airlines and TWA. Continental said its cuts will save travelers 50% off “Peanuts” fares and up to 25% off MaxSaver rates.
