A Los Angeles police officer was shot in the jaw Saturday while investigating possible gang activity in Boyle Heights. Police say they are holding possible suspects for questioning.
Officer Gabriel Rivas, 31, assigned to the Hollenbeck station’s anti-gang squad, had finished a field interview at 12:30 a.m. and was driving with his partner, Anna Carlisle, on 5th Street near Gless Street when bottles and rocks were thrown at his car, according to a police statement.
The officers “drove from the scene intending to request additional units and return in force to investigate the incident,” a police statement says, but Rivas suffered a single gunshot wound to the jaw, and was taken to County-USC Medical Center for surgery.
Rivas was later transferred to USC University Hospital. He was listed in fair condition.
