Regarding your editorial, “Nuts over Guns,†June 23:

You asked, “When will America get the message?†What message are you referring to? The message that no one can be held responsible for his or her actions, that there is always someone or something else (a gun) to blame? It is a fact that drunken drivers kill people. Usually, the alcohol is blamed. But we don’t blame the instrument, the auto. When O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife and her friend were savagely slaughtered, there was no outcry to ban long, serrated knives.

It is already a major crime to murder someone, whether by car, by gun or by knife. The law does not stop the crime. Gun bans do not work. Ask anyone in the nation’s capital. You stated that you do not want more Spokane-style tragedies. Any responsible, law-abiding citizen does not want that either.

The kind of future we as responsible citizens see, is the kind of future where we don’t need guns for defense against the bad guys, because the bad guys are gone. Gun owners are not the problem.
