State Housing Grants: Gayle Wilson, wife of Gov. Pete Wilson, trekked to Rancho Santa Margarita on Monday and offered $5.6 million in state grants to California communities that prove they can streamline construction regulations by waiving building fees and speeding up the construction permit process.
Unveiled last year, the state program, called BEGIN--for Building Equity and Growth in Neighborhoods--has given 12 California communities $4.7 million in special housing grants. The money will be used to assist first-time, low-income buyers with up to $20,000 in down payments.
Though none of the cities that have received grants are in Orange County, Wilson came here to announce the additional funding. Awards will be made in September. The state Department of Housing and Community Development sponsors the program.
