Education: Coverage of Positive School Efforts

I am writing to thank you and Mary Guthrie for the willingness to publish “For Students, It’s an Act of Healing,†(June 2). At a time when media plays such an instrumental role in shaping public perceptions, I so appreciated that your paper would cover examples of youth and local citizens joining together to create positive directions for their schools.

I want to commend Mary Guthrie, not only for her professional and thorough approach to gathering information, but even more for her genuine interest in looking for good news that helps communicate and perhaps even inspire others to actively lend a hand in serving schools like Curtiss Junior High School in Carson.

On behalf of the students, teachers and families involved in our ACE (Achievement and Commitment to Excellence) Program in Carson and citywide, we thank you. We thank you for caring enough, and perhaps even being courageous enough (for good news may not be as sensational and glitzy), to share the very common yet ordinary, positive side of what kids, teachers, parents and local citizens are doing in their schools to help make their communities great. We need to let that positive view be known and enhanced. Thank you for playing a part.
