According to the Chicago Tribune, Soldier Field on Friday looked nothing like it does when the Chicago Bears play.
The weather was dangerously hot, with 41 people treated for heat exhaustion and 13 of them hospitalized after Germany defeated Bolivia, 1-0, in the opening game of the World Cup.
Colorful clothes, flags, banners and streamers were the norm, and songs were sung and cheers yelled in Spanish and German.
It was a well-behaved crowd, attributed, the Tribune said, to its being generally sober. Beer sales ended after halftime, much to the dismay of some fans.
About the only place where there was no wait was a place known for long lines: the women’s rest room. The crowd was overwhelmingly male.
