Stocking explores Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in these intimate accounts of wandering the shores of the Great Lakes, listening to debates over development and following roads no longer traveled. After leaving a lonely island in Lake Huron, she realizes, “The thought of being home, feeding the animals, calling my neighbors, getting Gaia ready for school in the morning, seems comforting, like a lamp in a window on a dark night.†Her agreeable prose falters when she stumbles into PC postures.
