SEAL BEACH : Repairs to Pier Will Begin Today
- Share via
Workers will begin making repairs today to the Seal Beach Pier, which was damaged in a fire on May 21.
The historic wood boardwalk will remain closed for at least 15 more days during the first part of the repairs. By then, city officials hope to have enough lumber to complete a second and final set of repairs.
If officials can’t get enough wood by the end of June, they plan to place a temporary ramp over the burned portion and reopen it through the busy summer tourist season.
The fire, which temporarily trapped more than 100 people at the end of the boardwalk, caused at least $350,000 in damages. No one was injured.
The fire burned several wood supports and crossbeams, some of which must be replaced. Fire investigators suspect that the blaze started when charcoals from a grill fell below the boardwalk and ignited a gas line.
The damage was covered by insurance, but the city must pay a $100,000 deductible.
