SANTA ANA : Tustin Base Land Sought for School

Scrambling for space to build schools without condemning developed properties, the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education has approved a plan to ask the federal government for a portion of the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station, which is scheduled to close in 1996.

At its regular meeting Tuesday, the board voted unanimously to petition the federal government for the land.

According to the proposal, the district would seek 75 of the 150 acres of land that lies within district boundaries. The district would build a high school there that could accommodate about 2,000 students.

Trustee Audrey Yamagata-Noji noted that the Base Reuse Committee opposes the plan, but pointed out that “we’re basically looking at our best interests.â€

She added: “The only other possibility is to condemn acres of developed property.â€
