COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Jones Continues Hitting Tear in CSUN Softball Sweep

Shannon Jones hit four doubles and her 11th home run to pace Cal State Northridge’s 31-hit attack against Southern Utah in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader softball sweep Saturday at Cedar City, Utah.

The fourth-ranked Matadors (38-7, 13-3 in WAC play) won, 14-1, and, 13-0, in five innings.

Jones, who went six for eight with seven runs batted in, tied a single-season school record with her fourth double, giving her 13 this year. Beth Calcante went four for seven, including two triples, with four RBIs.

Jennifer Richardson (7-0) pitched a one-hitter and struck out four in the second game, improving her career record to 14-0. Amy Windmiller (19-2) struck out 14 and allowed six hits in the opener.

Cal Lutheran 19-9, Occidental 0-2--Sophomore Heidi Stevens pitched a five-inning perfect game for the Regals (24-7, 18-0) in the opener of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Eagle Rock. She was also three for four. Laree Reynolds had a home run and five RBIs in the first game and Shani Smyth hit a home run in the second game.

BASEBALL

Pierce 8, Valley 5--Adam West won his sixth in a row and hit a grand slam for the Brahmas (13-7) in a Western State Conference game. West, a sophomore from Thousand Oaks High, broke a 2-2 tie in the third with his slam.

Chris Frith-Smith pitched two innings to get his fourth save.

Barstow 17, Antelope Valley 16--The Vikings scored 12 runs on 13 hits in the seventh inning, overcoming the Marauders’ 14-4 lead in a Foothill Conference game. Jack Cox led Antelope Valley (13-15, 7-12) with three hits, including two home runs.

Cal Lutheran 14-15, Occidental 6-14--The Kingsmen scored three runs in the top of the ninth to complete a sweep of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Glendale 13, Canyons 2-- Bryan Warner hit two home runs for the Vaqueros (11-18-1, 9-10-1) in a WSC game.
