Springer Sets 54-Hole Greensboro Record

Mike Springer scrambled out of sand traps on the early holes and made par-saving putts most of the day to shoot a two-under 70 and maintain a four-shot lead going into today’s final round of the Greater Greensboro Open.

The 70 gave Springer a three-day total of 203, 13 under and a tournament record for 54 holes. The previous record was 204 by Danny Edwards on his way to winning the tournament in 1977.

Tied for second behind Springer at 207 are Brad Bryant, who shot a 68, and John Morse, who had a 67.

Jerry McGee shot a four-under 66 for a two-round total of 132 and a two-shot lead over a tightly bunched field in the Dallas Reunion Pro-Am Senior PGA tournament.

Football

Two-time Pro Bowl fullback John L. Williams of the Seattle Seahawks signed a free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The New Orleans Saints cut former University of Miami standout quarterback Steve Walsh at his request. The Saints gave up a No. 1, No. 3 and a conditional No. 2 draft pick to acquire Walsh from the Dallas Cowboys in 1990.

Six members of Navy’s football team reportedly are among 26 midshipmen who have been recommended for expulsion for alleged involvement in the 1992 cheating scandal, the Washington Post reported.

The Pacific 10 has asked Arizona State to respond to allegations its football program violated seven NCAA recruiting policies, the Arizona Republic reported.

Tennis

Defending champion Sergei Bruguera and Andrei Medvedev scored straight-set victories in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Open in Monaco. Bruguera eliminated second-seeded Stefan Edberg, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), and Medvedev defeated his former junior doubles partner, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

Iva Majoli, 16, of Croatia advanced to the final of the La Familia Open by beating Magdalena Maleeva, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, at Barcelona. Majoli will face top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who breezed past Germany’s Sabine Hack, 6-0, 6-1.

Gymnastics

Dennis Harrison, who won the all-around title Friday night, led Nebraska to its eighth NCAA men’s gymnastics championship at Lincoln, Neb.

Nebraska totaled 288.250 points, third best in meet history. Two-time defending champion Stanford was second with 285.925 and Ohio State was third for the third consecutive year with 285.025.

Steve McCain of UCLA won the vault and teammate Jim Foody won the high bar.

Two-time all-around champion Jenny Hansen of Kentucky won the vault and balance beam at the NCAA women’s gymnastics meet in Salt Lake City.

Diving

Mary Ellen Clark, 31, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., became the first woman in 23 years to sweep all three diving events by winning the 10-meter platform title on the final day of the U.S. Indoor Diving Championships at Minneapolis. She won the one- and three-meter springboard titles earlier in the week.

Russ Bertram, also of Ft. Lauderdale, held off 15-year-old Mark Ruiz of Puerto Rico to win the men’s 10-meter platform title.

Bowling

Norm Duke won his first major championship and became only the second bowler in Professional Bowlers Assn. history to earn more than $200,000 on the winter tour as he won the $325,000 General Tire Tournament of Champions at Fairlawn, Ohio.

Duke, 30, of Edmond, Okla., defeated leading-qualifier Eric Forkel of Chatsworth, 217-184, in the title match to earn his fourth title of the year and eighth of his career.

Miscellany

Tonya Harding filed a lawsuit in Portland, Ore., asking that ex-husband Jeff Gillooly be forced to return her pickup truck and her motorcycle, or give her $12,500. She also seeks $30,000 in punitive damages.

Bernard Tapie, the banned owner of the Olympique Marseille soccer team hit with heavy sanctions over a bribery scandal, said he would appeal his banishment from the game and his club’s demotion.

The $45,000 NASCAR Winston West Series California 200 at Bakersfield was postponed because of rain.

Names in the News

Dave Anderson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning sports columnist of the New York Times, was selected as the 1994 winner of the Red Smith Award by the Associated Press Sports Editors. The award will be presented June 24 at a luncheon during the APSE annual convention at Dana Point.
