Steve Sax, bothered by an injured left foot this spring, was put on unconditional release waivers by the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Sax, 34, was recalled from his rehabilitation assignment at double-A Birmingham and reinstated from the 15-day disabled list before being put on waivers. If he clears next week, the White Sox will be responsible for the remainder of his $3.1-million salary this year and his $3.1-million salary next season.
Sax, a five-time All-Star, was put on the disabled list April 1 with a bruised left heel. In seven games at Birmingham, he hit .318 with two doubles and one run batted in.

Santiago, who also was fined, charged the mound Sunday against the San Francisco Giants. . . . Right-hander Tim Worrell of the San Diego Padres was put on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, because of an injured right elbow. . . . The Boston Red Sox sent reliever Ricky Trlicek to double-A New Britain, Conn., and replaced him with reliever Ken Ryan.
