University’s Zeigler Is Headed to Cornell
University’s Demitrius Zeigler, Orange County’s leading scorer the last two seasons, announced Wednesday that he will play basketball at Cornell next season.
He will not sign a letter of intent; Ivy League schools don’t offer athletic scholarships.
Zeigler, a 6-foot-3 guard, was a first-team All-Orange County selection last season. He averaged 25.9 points and 8.3 rebounds in helping the Trojans reach the Southern Section I-A playoffs.
Zeigler set the University record with a 46-point performance against San Pedro. He made 10 three-pointers in that game.

Michael Elfman, whose girls’ soccer teams at Santa Margarita have won the Sea View League title and lost in the first round of the section Division I playoffs the past two years, has resigned his walk-on position, Athletic Director Richard Schaaf announced.
Elfman, whose teams were 30-8-9 in his two seasons as varsity coach, said coaching conflicted with his work.

Ryan Mariano, a 6-3 outside hitter for the El Toro boys’ volleyball team, has accepted a scholarship from Long Beach State, Charger Coach Mike Jagd announced.
Mariano leads El Toro, currently the county’s No. 1 team and ranked second in section Division I, in kills (149), digs (58) and aces (72).

Jennifer Tyus, a 5-4 defensive specialist for the Laguna Beach girls’ volleyball team, has signed a letter of intent at Colorado, Artist Coach Mike Soylular announced.
Tyus, who led her team in digs and aces, will join former Artist teammate Rachel Wacholder at Colorado.

Blythe Linsey, Calvary Chapel’s 6-5 center who averaged 24.7 points and 14.1 rebounds, has said she will enroll at Golden West.
In other signings:
--La Quinta’s Linda Rodriguez, a guard who averaged 21.5 points and made 72 three-point baskets, will attend Golden West.
--Susan Flaming, whose 10.7 assists per game helped Cypress reach the Division II-A semifinals, will attend Biola.
--Estancia’s Laura Czingula will attend La Verne. Czingula, a 5-10 forward, averaged 15 points and 10.8 rebounds for the Eagles, who reached the Division III-A girls’ semifinals.
