HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Chatsworth’s Ardito Delivers in Bottom of 9th
Tony Ardito’s single drove in Brandon Murphy with one out in the ninth inning to give host Chatsworth High a 6-5 victory over Kennedy in a Northwest Valley Conference baseball game Thursday.
Murphy had doubled with one out, and after Tony Montiel was intentionally walked, Ardito’s hit kept the Chancellors (15-3, 6-0) undefeated in league play.
Kennedy had a runner at third with one out in the top of the ninth, but Richard Prieto was forced out at home on an unsuccessful squeeze play and Montiel retired the next batter on a grounder to third.
Prieto was three for five with a double and drove in two runs for the Golden Cougars.
Reseda 5, Granada Hills 4--Carlos Nunez went four for four for the second time in two weeks, hit his fourth home run and drove in all of the Regents’ runs in an upset of the Highlanders, ranked third in the area by The Times.
Brian Menkin (1-0), who started the game behind the plate, relieved in the sixth inning and retired five batters in a row to get the victory.
Taft 5, Cleveland 3--The Cavaliers, struggling at the plate, lost their 10th in a row and the second game to Taft this week. Six of the Toreadors’ seven runs in the two two games were unearned.
Dave Helman was two for two and scored twice for Taft. Winning pitcher Justin Collins doubled and drove in two runs.
San Fernando 4, El Camino Real 2--Javier Barragan (2-1) pitched a five-hitter, struck out two and walked one for host San Fernando in the Northwest Valley Conference game.
Carlos Jimenez had a one-out, two-run double in the fifth to give the Tigers (3-12, 2-4) a 3-0 lead and he later scored on the front end of a double steal to give San Fernando a 4-0 advantage.
Canyon 3, Ventura 2--Junior left-hander Rick Engbrecht pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and recorded a save in a quarterfinal game of the Camarillo tournament.
Engbrecht relieved senior right-hander Lucas Solomon (2-2).
Camarillo 8, Santa Clara 2--Thomas Takata threw five innings of no-hit ball while his Camarillo teammates pounded out 14 hits, including six doubles, in a Camarillo tournament quarterfinal victory.
The senior right-hander surrendered two runs (one earned) on two hits in the sixth inning, and finished with four strikeouts and two walks.
Moorpark 16, Westlake 2--Senior right-hander Brian Garrettson (5-0) pitched a six-hitter, striking out five and walking four. Jason Adamson hit his third home run and had three RBIs.
Andy Huisenga had three hits and two RBIs and Rick Collier drove in two as the Musketeers (11-3) advanced to the semifinals of the Camarillo tournament.
Royal 8, Santa Barbara 6--Royal scored twice on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth to climax a comeback from a 6-1 deficit in a Santa Barbara tournament game.
Shawn Fossen was three for three, drove in two runs and scored what proved to be the game-winner for Royal (10-5).
Hart 7, Dos Pueblos 0--The Indians (12-4) got a combined no-hitter from Eric Spindt (3-3) and freshman Bobby Graves, who relieved in the fourth. Hart finished 4-0 in the Santa Barbara tournament.
Calabasas 8, San Marcos 3--Josh Morton turned in a four-for-four, two-RBI performance to lead Calabasas (11-4) in a Santa Barbara tournament game.
The senior third baseman hit his second consecutive leadoff home run in as many days, sparking a four-run inning for the Coyotes.
Bill Hoover added a three-run homer in the second inning, his first of the season.
L.A. Baptist 4, Village Christian 1--Matt Hernandez pitched a five-hitter, struck out eight and walked two for visiting L.A. Baptist in the Alpha League game. He also drove in two runs on a groundout and a squeeze bunt.
Matt Barker added two hits and an RBI for the Knights (9-5, 2-1).
L.A. Lutheran 22, Pacific Christian 2--Senior right-hander Greg Norlie (4-2) threw a no-hitter, striking out 11 and walking four. Pacific Christian scored its runs in the top of the fifth on a walk and two errors and then conceded the game.
Norlie went three for four with three RBIs. Raul Ortiz (three for three, two doubles) and Aaron Roepke also drove in three runs. Robert Aase was three for three.
Paraclete 7, Rosamond 1--Pitcher Dan O’Gara struck out eight, walked eight and allowed four hits in picking up his third victory without a loss. Dennis Winchell hit a three-run home run with nobody out in the first. Two batters later, Nick Jenkins hit a two-run homer.
SOFTBALL
Moorpark 10, Calabasas 0--Mindy Penrod pitched her first no-hitter of the season for host Moorpark in the Frontier League game.
Penrod (7-0) struck out eight and did not walk a batter, but two Calabasas runners reached base on errors. She also had four hits and an RBI for the Musketeers (9-0, 5-0).
Taft 6, Reseda 4--Brahna Pastorini was three for four with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored for visiting Taft in the Northwest Valley Conference game.
Sonia Marin added two hits and two RBIs for the Toreadors (8-7, 2-4). Rosie Yates had three hits for Reseda (9-3, 1-2).
Hoover 2, Glendale 1-- Daphne Vadman got Hoover’s only hit of the game--a single leading off the sixth inning. She moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Emily Carson’s groundout.
Hoover (7-7, 1-1) got its other run in the fourth, combining a walk, steal and error. Tina Kinney (7-6) pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief.
Oak Park 6, St. Bonaventure 0--Sophomore Kaylene Boldroff (6-1) pitched a one-hitter, allowing a single in the second inning. She struck out six and walked one as the Eagles improved to 9-4, 2-0 in Tri-Valley League play. Shana Silverman was two for four with a run batted in.
Bell-Jeff 15, St. Genevieve 0--Carrie Breedlove pitched a one-hitter, striking out 15 in a Camino Real League game shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Montclair Prep 5, Alverno 3--Tami Freedman doubled and hit a two-run home run, her sixth, to highlight a come-from-behind victory. Jodi Gelfand also had two hits and two RBIs.
BOYS’ TRACK
Quartz Hill 93, Antelope Valley 43--Troy Searcy and Jamaal Chase each won two events to lead host Quartz Hill in the Golden League meet.
The victory gave the Rebels (4-1, 4-0) at least a share of the league title. They can win it outright with a victory over Littlerock next week.
Harvard-Westlake 71, Bishop Montgomery 56--Kadara Lewis won the 100 meters in a personal best of 10.6 and Jordan Elias took the 200 in 22.4 for host Harvard-Westlake (4-1, 4-1) in the Mission League meet.
Notre Dame 89, Alemany 38--Carlos Peruyera won the 200 in 22.3 and the 400 in 51.5 to lead host Notre Dame (3-2, 3-1) in the Mission League meet.
GIRLS’ TRACK
Quartz Hill 93, Antelope Valley 33--Freshman Michelle Perry won three events to help host Quartz Hill clinch at least a share of its eighth consecutive Golden League title.
The Rebels (4-1, 4-0) can clinch the championship outright with a victory over Littlerock next week.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Crespi d. St. Bernard, 14-16, 15-7, 15-13, 16-14--Nick DiPasquale had 18 kills and Joe Bellavia finished with 14 as the Celts improved to 5-5, 4-4 in the Mission League match. Christian Hunt added seven blocks.
Providence d. Oakwood, 15-11, 14-16, 15-11, 15-12--Senior outside hitter John Buckley had 39 kills, 10 short of the single-match school record he set against Oakwood in 1993. Freshman Jose Tano added 13 blocks.
BOYS’ SWIMMING
Chaminade 123, Notre Dame 45--George Packer swam in four victories and freshman Kevin Rodin and Sean Feeney three each for Chaminade. Packer won the 200-meter individual medley and the 100 backstroke, and he joined Rodin and Feeney on the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Rodin won the 100 freestyle and Feeney the 100 butterfly.
