Politics: A 26-year-old state legislator from Providence, R.I., is winning strong support from Hollywood in his campaign for Congress. MCA Chairman Lew R. Wasserman’s fund-raiser for the young politician attracted contributions from QVC chief Barry Diller, Motown Records Chairman Clarence Avant, MCA President Sidney J. Sheinberg and other luminaries, the Providence Journal-Bulletin reported. Non-industry backers include real estate baron and San Francisco Giants owner Walter Shorenstein, professional golfer Amy Alcott and Los Angeles gay activist David Mixner. The source of the youthful Rhode Islander’s appeal? Hollywood tends to favor liberal causes, so perhaps it’s that candidate Patrick Kennedy is a left-leaning Democrat, much like his father, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.).
