COLLEGE ROUNDUP : With Little Support, Concordia’s Virches Wins
Concordia scored two runs in the top of the first inning and added another in the seventh to beat host Occidental College, 3-1, Wednesday in a nonconference men’s baseball game.
Adam Virches gave up one earned run, struck out four and walked one in pitching a complete-game victory. Occidental’s lone run came in the bottom of the third inning.
Despite being outhit, 7-4, the Tigers improved to 12-17.
In other nonconference baseball:
UC Riverside 11, Chapman 1--Jason Smith and Duke Best had doubles for Chapman (8-17). UC Riverside is 23-8.
In golf:
UC Irvine finishes 13th--The Anteaters posted a score of 921 to tie Washington State for 13th place at the Fresno Lexus Golf Classic. UC Irvine’s top finisher in the 54-hole tournament at Sunnyside Country Club was Steve Holmes, who finished with a 16-over-par 229 on rounds of 76-76-77. Teammate Tim Hart finished at 230 and Paul Calbrase shot 231.
Irvine hosts the Anteater Invitational at Coto de Caza Country Club Monday and Tuesday.
In nonconference softball:
Cal State Fullerton 6-7, Arizona State 1-3--Melissa Hadfield and Rose Garces each had three hits to lead the pace the 13-hit attack for the Titans (16-19).
In the first game, Monica Bagalayos had three hits and Jennifer Mortensen pitched a complete game, allowing six hits, for the Titans.
In women’s nonconference tennis:
CS Fullerton 5, Idaho State 2--Kara Kolb, a Titan sophomore, needed 3 1/2 hours to win her match, 6-7, 7-5, 7-5.
