The West San Gabriel Valley All-Star basketball games, featuring 48 seniors, will be played Friday night at La Canada High. The girls’ game begins at 6, the boys’ at 8.

Mark Schuster, head football coach at Azusa High for the past nine seasons, has been named coach at Corona del Mar High.

Schuster, 46, played football at Arroyo High and Citrus College.

Some of the nation’s finest high school track and field athletes will participate in the Arcadia/Foot Locker Invitational April 9 at Arcadia High.

Bryan Howard of Canyon Springs High in Moreno Valley, who has run a 10.43-second 100-meter dash, and 200-meter junior champion Jermaine Stafford of Rochester, N.Y., are among the top boys who will compete.

Aspen Burkett of Colorado, the national indoor champion at 55 meters, and Long Beach Poly sprinters Andrea Anderson and Aminah Haddad headline the girls’ competition.

Boys’ and girls’ soccer players are eligible to apply for $1,000 scholarships that will be awarded by the county Department of Recreation and Parks and Ford Motor Co.

Fifteen scholarships will be awarded during the spring. Criteria include diligence and commitment to soccer, financial need, grade-point average, soccer proficiency and community service.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Dean Karnoski, who led Glendora High football teams to a Southern Section title and seven playoff appearances in nine seasons, has been named head coach at Citrus College.

Karnoski replaces Mike Merandi, who resigned after last season.

Karnoski compiled a record of 65-35-4 at Glendora and led the Tartans to the 1989 Division IV championship. He will continue to teach at Glendora.

Mt. San Antonio College will play host to the youth days portion of the annual Mt. SAC Relays on April 8-9.

The youth days, sponsored by the Amateur Athletic Foundation, will involve more than 4,000 children in grades three through nine. The instructional program provides training in track and field and concludes with competition. Participants receive awards, T-shirts and passes to the Mt. SAC Relays.

COLLEGES

The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team finished its season last Thursday with a 97-78 loss to Hawaii Pacific in the second round of the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament at Tulsa, Okla.

Hawaii Pacific, the defending national champion, also defeated Azusa Pacific earlier in the season.

Ronnie Winbush scored 18 points and had nine rebounds for Azusa Pacific (29-5). Raymond Tutt added 13 points for the Cougars.

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team, ranked 16th in NCAA Division II, entered the week 16-9-1 and 5-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

The Broncos are competing in the Mesa State (Colo.) tournament.

Sophomore second baseman Jason Wakefield is batting .395, and senior catcher Brian Dennis is batting .394 with 27 runs batted in. Junior outfielder Aaron Edwards has 23 steals in 26 attempts.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Jason Postelwaite, South Pasadena--Postelwaite, a junior outside hitter for the Tiger volleyball team, had 23 kills and three aces in South Pasadena’s five-set nonleague victory over perennial area power Arcadia.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Brian Forster, Pomona-- Forster, a senior, won the one-meter and three-meter diving events at the NCAA Division III national championships last weekend at Williams College in Massachusetts.

MISCELLANY

Sandy Neilson-Bell, who won three gold medals in swimming at the 1972 Olympics, will be inducted into the El Monte Union High School District All Sports Hall of Fame at a luncheon on April 19 at the El Monte Community Center. Neilson-Bell is a 1974 graduate of El Monte High.

Track and field meets that will include a variety of age-group competition will be staged in and around the San Gabriel Valley in the next few weeks. The Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation is conducting sign-ups at Carolyn Rosas Park in Rowland Heights and Steinmetz Park in Hacienda Heights for the ARCO Jesse Owens track meet April 30. Other meets include:

The public is invited to participate in four grass volleyball tournaments that will staged over four months at Azusa Pacific.
