Rookie Chipper Jones, one of the top young players in the Atlanta Brave organization, will sit out the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Jones was injured Friday in an exhibition against the New York Yankees at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Keith Mitchell increased his average to .441 with two hits, and Lee Tinsley had three hits as the Seattle Mariners beat the Colorado Rockies, 7-0, at Tucson. Mitchell is 15 for 34. . . . Kansas City signed left-hander Charlie Leibrandt to a minor league contract.
