More Testing Scheduled for CSUN’s Lofton

NORTHRIDGE â€”  The results of a battery of tests being performed on Cal State Northridge forward Brent Lofton showed that his heart is functioning “within normal limits for an athlete,â€� a school spokesman said Wednesday.

Lofton, a senior, was held out of Northridge’s basketball game against Southern Utah last week after complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. He also will not play in tonight’s game at San Diego State, the season finale.

Preliminary tests on his heart showed a potential abnormality, team doctors said. On Tuesday, Lofton underwent five hours of testing, including a treadmill test, and doctors were pleased by the results.

However, Barry Smith, the school’s sports information director, said Lofton will not be released to play in tonight’s game because doctors want him to complete an additional test that requires him to be hooked up to a heart monitor for 24 hours.

Lofton was unavailable for comment.
