COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fresno State Takes the Air Out of Titan Offense

Cal State Fullerton, the nation’s top-ranked baseball team in two polls, was held to four hits and host Fresno State beat the Titans, 5-2, in a nonconference game Wednesday.

Tommy Minor (3-2) pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs and striking out six. Fresno State is 6-8; Fullerton 15-3.

The Titans were coming off an impressive weekend during which they beat Georgia Tech and Oklahoma on the way to winning the Anaheim Hilton & Towers tournament.

The victories gave Fullerton the top spot in the nation, according to Collegiate Baseball Magazine and USA Today. Baseball America has Fullerton No. 2 behind Florida State.

Things started well for Fullerton on Wednesday when lead-off hitter Dante Powell hit a home run, his fifth of the season.

But the Titans didn’t score again until Brian King opened the ninth with his second home run.

Fullerton had the tying run at the plate with one out in the ninth, but pinch-hitter Sal Mancuso lined into a game-ending double play.

Fresno State tied the score at 1 on a home run by James Borges in the second. The Bulldogs added two runs in the fourth against starter Jon Ward (0-1). Fresno got two unearned runs in the sixth off reliever Chad Rolish.

In other nonconference baseball:

San Francisco State 10, Concordia 1--Concordia (3-8) fell behind 10-0 after six innings as six San Francisco State pitchers held the Eagles hitless after Alex Vicario led off the game with a base hit.

Jeff Daniel got the loss for Concordia, giving up 10 runs and seven hits in four innings of work.

In women’s first-round Golden State Athletic Conference playoffs:

Point Loma Nazarene 72, Concordia 71--Center Lori Carper scored 24 points for Point Loma Nazarene in its upset victory. At the end of the first half, Concordia was leading by four points and could not fend off Point Loma’s strong second-half play. Gitte Mejer had 29 points for Concordia (15-13).

Southern California Christian 80, California Baptist 57--Snaja Simidzija had 22 points and 14 rebounds and Jamie Zitterkopf had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Southern California College in the first round of the conference playoffs.

The Vanguards will travel to Azusa Pacific for a second-round game Friday at 7:30 p.m.
