Michigan-California Announces Plant Closure: Michigan-California Lumber Co. said it will shut down a 104-year-old mill in Camino, Calif., in May, laying off 280 workers. The closure will also eliminate the jobs of an undetermined number of truck drivers and others dependent on the mill. In mid-1993, the mill appeared to be on the verge of rescue with the announcement that Sierra Pacific Industries was negotiating to acquire the facility. However, talks broke off. The company blamed the shutdown on federal logging restrictions, even though the company owns 75,000 acres of forest in the area, 120 miles northeast of San Francisco. Environmentalists say the restrictions are long overdue.
