1994 BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW : SIX TEAMS TO WATCH : Huntington Beach
Coach: Rocky Ciarelli (10th year).
1993: 23-0, 14-0 in the Sunset League. Won the Division I championship, defeating Capistrano Valley.
Key returners: Jeremy Bart, 6-3, outside hitter, Jr.; Jody Cook Fisher, 5-11, outside hitter, Jr.; Mike Grave, 6-3, outside hitter, Sr.; Brad Simon, 6-4, middle blocker, Sr.; Nick Ziegler, 6-5, middle blocker, Sr.
Key newcomers: Chad Gremel, 5-10, outside hitter, Sr.; Steve Markham, 5-11, outside hitter, Sr.; Zach Montgomery, 5-11, outside hitter, Jr.; Josh Moss, 6-4, setter, Sr.; Sean Tucker, 6-3, middle blocker, Jr.
Outlook: Ziegler and Grave are the two returning starters Ciarelli will look to for leadership as the Oilers try for their second consecutive section title. “It’s the biggest team I’ve had and that’s the easiest way to score points--with the block,” Ciarelli said. Blocking will be a strength, but the Oilers are a well-balanced team. All-county setter Chris Jones graduated, so Moss will take over after leading the junior varsity to a 17-0 record last season.
