PORT HUENEME : Bicyclist Sought by Police Is Hit by Car
A 34-year-old Oxnard man was listed in critical condition Sunday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center after being hit by a car as he was escaping police on a bicycle, investigators said.
Russell Acuna, who Port Hueneme police said was wanted on a misdemeanor bench warrant, was struck by a dark-colored sedan about 12:45 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Halyard Street.
Acuna was first spotted by police minutes earlier in the parking lot of Champs Restaurant, 1900 S. Victoria Ave.
Before he could be arrested, he sped off on a bicycle, heading toward the Marina Village condominium complex, Port Hueneme police said. Officers now are looking for the driver of the sedan, which failed to stop after striking Acuna, who suffered major head injuries. Police would not disclose Sunday what Acuna is charged with under the warrant.
