HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Lopez Lifts Campbell Hall With 30-Point Effort
Alex Lopez scored 30 points and had eight rebounds and three blocked shots to lead Campbell Hall High to a 66-52 victory over San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s in the Southern Section Division V-AA boys’ basketball quarterfinal Friday before an overflow crowd at Campbell Hall.
The victory sets up a Tuesday semifinal match on a neutral court with Delphic League foe Brentwood, which is led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Jr.
Brentwood won the Southern Section title in 1991, and Campbell Hall took the championship in 1992. The teams split their league games this season, with both schools winning at home.
St. Margaret’s (20-4) was led by Damian Raibon’s 17 points, well below his average of 30. He was guarded by Harold Sylvester. Lupe Rodriguez added 14 points for St. Margaret’s.
Sylvester finished with 11 points.
Lopez scored 21 points in the second half for the Vikings (19-8). Campbell High broke open a close came by scoring the first 11 points of the third quarter to take a 37-21 lead with 5 minutes 37 seconds remaining in the period.
Nick Rolf came off the bench to score 10 for the Vikings.

Santa Clara 55, Pius X 53--The Saints advanced to the Division IV-A semifinals with a victory in the quarterfinal game at St. John Bosco.
Serra 84, Village Christian 68--Ricky Price led Serra with 28 points as the host Cavaliers jumped to an early lead in a Division IV-A quarterfinal at Serra. Serra led, 47-33, at halftime as Village Christian could get no closer then seven points in the second half. David Gustafson scored 23 points for the Crusaders, who ended the season at 17-9.
Carson 56, Cleveland 53--Anthony Browder hit two free throws with seven seconds to play to lift Carson (18-7) to a victory over Cleveland (14-8) in a City Division 4-A game at Cleveland. Browder finished with 21 points.
Banning 51, San Fernando 49--The Tigers lost in the City 3-A Division quarterfinals.
Santa Ana Mater Dei 78, Loyola 60--Miles Simon scored 30 points and Schea Cotton 21 to lead Santa Ana Mater Dei in a Southern Section Division I-A semifinal game at Pauley Pavilion.
Before 6,000, Loyola (22-5) stayed close for three quarters. The Cubs trailed, 36-34, at halftime and 53-46 after three quarters. But Mater Dei (30-0) went on a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to break it open.
Mater Dei will play Huntington Beach Edison in the championship game next Saturday night at Anaheim Arena. Edison upset Palmdale, 65-63, in the other semifinal.
Loyola’s Toby Bailey, who has signed with UCLA, scored 16 points and made seven of 16 shots.
Crenshaw 106, Washington 74--Crenshaw forced 18 turnovers and enjoyed a 49-22 rebounding advantage in a City Section 4-A quarterfinal game at Washington. Tremaine Fowlkes led the Cougars (23-2) with 27 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Dayron Harris of Washington (12-12) led all scorers with 30 points and four rebounds, but he fouled out with 6:40 in the fourth quarter.
Dorsey 71, Westchester 68--Rickey Blackman scored 23 points and Sherwin Moran added 13 to lead Dorsey (14-10) to an upset over second-seeded Westchester (23-5) in a City 4-A quarterfinal at Crenshaw High. Ben Sanders scored 16 points for Westchester.
Inglewood 60, Huntington Beach 47--Second-seeded Inglewood jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back in a Southern Section II-AA quarterfinal at Marina High. Paul Pierce scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Inglewood (26-3). Tony Gonzalez led Huntington Beach (19-11) with 25 points.
GIRLS
Taft 49, Sylmar 37--After leading by only four at halftime, the Toreadors (9-2) outscored Sylmar, 14-5, in the third quarter.
Junior center Rachel Martinez came off the bench to lead Taft with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Crystal Griffin added 15 rebounds.
Junior forward Nedra Manley scored 18 points for the Spartans.
Carson 59, Belmont 25--Carson, which struggled the last two weeks off the regular season, regrouped to win a City Division 4-A quarterfinal at Belmont.
Diane Bell scored 14 points and Natasha Hanna added 15 rebounds as second-seeded Carson (22-4) advanced to the semifinals.
Banning 55, Garfield 26--Banning got off to a quick start and led, 45-15, at halftime in a 3-A quarterfinal at Garfield. Miriam Gonzalez led Garfield (11-11) with eight points and 13 rebounds.
Jefferson 53, Hamilton 43--Kyetra Brown scored 16 points and Chaka Smith added 14 to lead Jefferson (19-7) in City 3-A quarterfinal game at Hamilton.
