Fritz Schaetzler; Baritone

Fritz Schaetzler, 95, a lyric baritone who despite losing a leg and having a hand paralyzed at the World War I Battle of Flanders, went on to give 3,000 performances at the Stuttgart Opera in the 1920s and 1930s. A half-Jew, he became a hero in Germany after being wounded during the First World War but was persecuted by the Nazis in the second. Schaetzler was allowed to emigrate to the United States after singing for Gens. Dwight D. Eisenhower and George Patton. He and his soprano wife eventually settled in La Habra, Calif., where they taught voice and performed occasionally. In La Habra on Feb. 3.
