Foothill
Coach: Dennis Claus (third year).
1993: 13-8, 8-2 in the Century League; lost in the first round of Southern Section Division I playoffs to Dana Hills.
Key returners: Rob Claus, Jr., will play No. 2 doubles or No. 3 singles; Nate Griset, Sr., will play No. 1 or No. 2 doubles; Jack Huang, Sr., will play No. 2 singles; Thomas Lin, Jr., will play No. 1 or 2 doubles, was co-team MVP with Huang; Mike Penn, Sr., will play No. 1 or No. 2 doubles; Lance Stern, Jr., will probably play No. 3 singles; Ryan Thompson, Jr., will play No. 1 singles, ranked nationally in doubles and top 15 in Southern California 16s singles.
Key newcomers: John Yeh, Jr., will play doubles.
Outlook: Foothill returns everyone from a team that tied for the Century League title. Thompson, who was injured during the playoffs, had an excellent summer and should be one of the county’s top players. But doubles might actually be Foothill’s strength. “Our doubles carried us last year and I expect them to be pretty strong this year,” Claus said. “I expect to win league. But after that, I don’t know. It’s amazing how many good teams there are in Orange County now.”
