BOYS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING ’94 / Six Teams to Watch : Woodbridge
Coach: Dan Gaines (ninth year).
1993: Second in the Sea View League; fourth at Division I championship meet.
Key returners: Derya Buyukuncu, Sr.; Tunch Doker, Sr.; Yan Gendlin, Sr.; Dawson Hughes, Jr.; Andrew Lazenby, Sr.; Kensaku Misono, So.; Mike Moore, Sr.; Sean Moore, Jr.; Justin Steinhouser, Jr.; Ethan Yotter, Jr.
Key newcomers: Deniz Ari, So.; Chris Chen, Jr.; Tim Espinosa, So.; Matt Simmons, Jr.
Outlook: When you have “the greatest high school swimmer in the country,” as many county coaches have referred to Michigan-bound Buyukuncu, you start with a great building block that is destined to get stronger. Throw in the fact that the Warriors return just about everyone, and you end up with a team highly favored to win it all. In fact, according to a late fall report by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Assn. of America, Woodbridge is ranked 10th in the nation, based on last season’s performance and on estimated performances by its returning swimmers.
