1994 Prep Golf: Six Teams to Watch : Huntington Beach
Coach: Bill Seckington (17th year).
1992-93: 13-5, 10-2 in the Sunset League; finished in a three-way tie for fifth in the Southern Regional.
Key returners: Scott Blaska, Sr.; Perry Dickey, So., averaged 78.5; Jeff Farley, Jr., averaged 74.5; Greg Uberuaga, Sr., averaged 77.8; Brian Schippel, Jr.; Gabe Shiwota, Sr.
Key newcomers: Tony Mendoza, Fr.; Chris Wilson, So.
Outlook: Huntington Beach was another team that wasn’t happy with its finish last season, but the Oilers have all but one of their starters and another letterman back to try again this season. Farley, the Sunset League MVP, and Uberuaga were No. 1 and 2 last season and Dickey, whose father, Perry Jr., is the director of golf at SeaCliff Country Club, was No. 4. The Oilers are tight-knit and dedicated to improving--four of them recently took it upon themselves to play Pelican Hill Golf Club and paid the twilight rate of $50 each. “They felt disappointed not playing to their capabilities in the regional qualifying tournament last year,” Seckington said. “They all worked really hard in the off-season.”
