Guns N’ Poseurs

In response to “Meet Six-Gun Sharon Stone,” by Bruce Newman (Jan. 30):

After “Basic Instinct,” one might wonder what Sharon Stone has left to reveal. Thankfully, it appears she’s also gifted with the social conscience, artistic courage and keen intellect to show us “woman revealed in a new way” in her forthcoming film.

And just what is this wonderful new woman about? Stone proudly points out that “this character’s not trying to run around in the nude so she can get control over somebody.” Instead, she resolves conflict and gains control as all great and principled men have in the past--by grabbing a gun and blowing someone away. And on top of that, she rhapsodizes, “I just love the violence,” as impressionable young women everywhere take notice.

I had been afraid that some of Stone’s lily-livered, do-gooder sisters like Sarah Brady would prevail in their misguided attempt to address and overcome America’s addiction to violence with the power of their intellect, compassionate social conscience and compelling political activism.

But thankfully, “Thelma & Louise” turned things around, and now Stone has further enriched womankind’s image by joining the men in preserving one of America’s most cherished tenets: A gun gives you power and might makes you right.

Way to go, Sharon. You’re one way-cool ‘90s babe.
