‘93 Toy Sales Post Modest Rise: American retail toy sales rose 3% to an estimated $17.5 billion in 1993 from $17 billion the previous year, John Amerman, chairman of American Toy Manufacturers Inc., announced at the start of the 91st annual American International Toy Fair in New York. Amerman said manufacturers’ shipments, in wholesale dollars, climbed 1.6% to $11.7 billion, short of the predicted 5% to 7% increase. Including video games, total industry shipments in 1993 were up 5.3% to $15.7 billion. The plush-toy category was up 12%; activity toys grew a healthy 13% increase, and the male action toys category surged 26%.
