Under pressure to reduce accidents in the nation’s growing regional airline industry, the Federal Aviation Administration announced that commuter pilots will be required to undergo the same training as captains of jetliners. The FAA plans to have the proposed standards ready by this summer, officials said. Commuter pilots are currently required to pass regular proficiency tests, but the FAA has no formal standards for their training programs. Among other things, the new FAA standards could require more training on flight simulators and in working with fellow crew members, agency officials said.
