Freeway Charge
No added sales tax, please. The last temporary quarter-cent sales tax turned out to be a permanent tax. If we need to raise $700 million to get the earthquake grant, let us do it in a temporary and common sense way. Charge $1 per vehicle on cars entering the freeways; that will cost $10 per week to drivers needing to use freeways. It will keep off ones that can use other means of travel. Do this until the needed $700 million is paid off, then remove the tax. What needs caution is to avoid the greedy officials wanting to continue the tax after the needed amount is paid off.
This will have several advantages; it will be a temporary tax, it will thin out traffic and it will allow quicker repair of broken freeways.
