Compaq Joins Subnotebook PC Field: Compaq Computer Corp. will begin selling a 3 1/2-pound personal computer with a base price of $1,400. The computer, called the Contura Aero, has a very quiet keyboard and backlit screen. It can run up to six hours with a rechargeable battery. Houston-based Compaq, the third-largest maker of personal computers, is a latecomer to the market for subnotebooks, machines that weigh less than five pounds. International Business Machines Corp. is advertising a subnotebook from $1,300, and a comparable machine by Gateway 2000 Inc. sells for $1,500. Compaq is aiming the product at students, journalists, sales representatives and executives who travel, and attorneys for courtroom use.
