2-Month-Old Shane Closes; Trattoria Spiga to Hold Benefit

Shane at Newport Beach closed its doors on Monday, just two months after it opened. Its location on Coast Highway, next to the Balboa overpass, has seen a dozen restaurants come and go in the past two decades.

The latest incarnation was a product of trend-setter West Coast Restaurant Ventures, which operates Diva, Topaz Cafe and Kachina, among other Orange County locations.

A company spokesman said the site will continue to be used for catered events.

Dana Point has a new coffeehouse: Natale’s Coffee in the Lantern Bay Village Shopping Center. The owners are Harold and Gina Burt, who are offering 30 flavors of coffee as well as baked goods and sandwiches.

Hours: Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Trattoria Spiga will play host to a “cleaned-up” version of the television show “Studs” in a benefit Tuesday evening. Two men from the Young Professionals Against Cancer and three women from Cystic Fibrosis’ Le Premiere Groupe will recount their dating experiences--dream or disaster.

The restaurant will serve pasta and pizza; admission is $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Half the proceeds benefit the two charities.

Emporio Armani Express is promising a 45-minute dinner to attract people going to the nearby South Coast Repertory Theatre and other venues.

The prix fixe Italian dinners are $18 a person, with a glass of wine. Tax and tip are not included.

Later in the evening, people who present ticket stubs from SCR will receive a free cappuccino when they buy dessert. The restaurant has extended its hours to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Prego Ristorante is sending its best customer to Italy. Rob Howard, who racked up 2,500 frequent diner points in 1993, will receive a free trip for two.

The restaurant awards one point for each dollar spent. Howard won by eating at the restaurant almost every day and by holding a company party and a wedding reception there, said restaurant representatives. He also frequented some of the other dozen restaurants that participate in the Table One frequent diner program.

“We’ll miss seeing him here during the week he’s gone” to Italy, said Prego’s general manager, Frank Vessia.
